When you look out the window what do you see? Do you see the same old back yard or the same old street scape? Do you see the same blank cubicle staring back at you? Sometimes I wonder, what do you see? If I'm being honest, most of the time when I look out the window I am unimpressed. Not because I do not enjoy what I see, or because I am not proud of my home or my backyard, but mostly because I struggle with wonder. 

When I ask my 3 year old son what he see's when he looks out the window, the answers are often humorous, nonsensical and full of whimsy. The world that is before him is merely a suggestion, as he plays out the theatre of his mind on the grand stage known as our backyard. In his mind, the world is literally whatever he wants it to become. When we go for walks together, he points out the most obvious things, but he is desperate in his quest for knowledge and understanding, causing even the most mundane thing to be riveting, and more importantly, that thing becomes one more item that will spark his imagination, inspiring him to play out a new scene, while the world fades away and his imagination becomes reality. 

The cynic in me says, he will grow up one day. He's young, he is only three, eventually he will find out the real world is like... but there is a part of me that has a longing for the days when I looked out the window, and all I say in front of me was opportunity and inspiration. 

So why don't we give it a try? I'm not talking about immersing yourself so deeply within the theatre of your mind that you lose all touch with reality, but what I am suggesting is that we start viewing the world through the lens of inspiration and imagination.

When you look out the window, what do you see? 

I see a world that needs creators, artists, architects, and entrepreneurs, I see a world that needs to people to look at the upside without fixating on the downside, I see a world that needs people to take risks, and dream dreams, I see a world that is desperate for somebody, anybody, who is willing to invest generously of their time, talents and abilities into even the most bleak situations because we are keenly aware that even though the return on investment may seem limited, the opportunity to help even one person is reason enough to push beyond the limits of realism and inspire the imagination required to not only see the world as it is, but to see what it could be...
